Motherwort – Leonurus Cardiaca

The botanical name is from the Greek “leon”, for lion and “andourus”, for tail, as the plant resembles a lion’s tail. “Cardiaca” refers to its traditional usage as a heart tonic.

The Greeks gave Motherwort to pregnant women suffering from anxiety and also to anyone suffering from afflictions of the heart and nervous system. Maude Grieves tells us that there is “no better herb for strengthening and gladdening the heart”. Chinese studies have also found motherwort to decrease clotting and the level of fat in the blood
